Best Acrylic Painting Tips For Pro

Acrylic Painting Tips

Acrylic is a beautiful medium to get introduced to the genre of opaque paints. Before moving on to oil paints, acrylic is the perfect step to start painting with. It is easy to use and spreads evenly. The water base makes it easy to manage, as well. And, the quick drying time means that you can master layering techniques with relative ease. However, there are a few points to remember while working with acrylic. If you are a beginner, here are some acrylic painting tips for creating art like a professional.

Every artist needs to follow some necessary steps while working with any medium. Here’s how to create masterpieces with acrylic just like a professional.

Work Fast With Acrylic

Acrylic paint dries up fast. So, have the picture in your mind. Don’t take too long while painting. Once acrylic dries up, it becomes resistant to water. So, you will have to work fast if you wish to modify the paint in any way. However, this also allows creating layers fast and easy. Though once dried, the bottom layer will no longer mix with the layer on top.

Don’t Take Out Too Much Paint On Palette

As already mentioned, acrylic paint dried up fast. So, you should never take out too much paint on the palette. Once it dries up, the paint will become unusable. And, if at all you have to keep the color on the palette overnight, you have to spray some water over the colors and then place the palette in an airtight container. Alternatively, you may also place the palette in a box and seal it using plastic or cellophane paper.

Blend With Caution

Don’t rush while blending colors. While blending does give excellent colors and gradient, there will be bubbles on your canvas if you do it too fast. And, that’s not something any artist wants.

Titanium White Helps Create Opaque Colors

If you have to create opaque colors without using any other medium, simply use titanium white with the color pigment. This will allow you to develop opaque paint shades without the use of a medium. You can control the opacity with or without the use of water. The opacity will be maximum when you are not using water at all. For a more watercolor-like effect, add water to it.

Acrylic As A Base For Oil Painting

Many professional artists will tell you that they use acrylic to create the base while working with oil paints. The reason is the quick drying time of acrylic. Since acrylic dries up fast, the base can be made much quicker than creating it with any oil paint. This considerably brings down the time to create an oil painting. However, remember that this technique is only feasible if you do not plan on painting wet on wet layers. Acrylic is water-soluble paint, while oil paint has oil as the medium. The two never mix. Hence, there is no way you will be able to blend the oil paint into the acrylic base even if the acrylic layer is wet. However, use this hack when you have a short time to create a painting and you are using oil as the major medium.

Acrylic might seem simple to use, but it requires skill and practice, just like any other medium. Keep experimenting and create the style that best suits you.
